Waffles with Spiced Brown Sugar Syrup

INGREDIENTS

WAFFLES

1 cup self-rising flour

1/2 cup white whole wheat flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons C&H Granulated Sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 1/4 cups milk

2 tablespoons melted butter

SPICED BROWN SUGAR SYRUP

1 1/2 cups C&H Dark Brown Sugar

2/3 cup unsweetened apple juice or cider

1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

DIRECTIONS

FOR THE WAFFLES

1.Preheat waffle iron and lightly grease with oil.

2.In a medium mixing bowl, sift or whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

3.In a small bowl, beat egg with milk, then whisk egg mixture into flour mixture. Next, whisk in melted butter until batter is smooth. Let batter sit for 5 minutes before baking.

4.Ladle batter onto hot waffle iron. Cook according to waffle iron directions.

FOR THE SPICED BROWN SUGAR SYRUP

1.In a small saucepot over medium heat, whisk all ingredients together and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes, whisking occasionally, or until it reaches desired syrup consistency; hold aside until ready to serve.

CHEF’S TIP: White whole wheat flour offers all the nutritional goodness of regular whole wheat flour.
